Comic Book Editing with Writers Roland Mann and Aaron Sparrow

Comic Book Editing with Writers Roland Mann and Aaron Sparrow

August 2, 2021

Comic book editors Roland Mann and Aaron Sparrow join Wes to talk about the comic book editorial process. Every good creator needs an editor. Ideally, an editor will know the creators well and understand their objectives, but still be able to offer thoughtful criticism, especially if something isn’t quite resonating within the story. Comic book editing is similar to editing other forms of entertainment. With one distinct difference. Comic books are told in sequential art, adding an entire new layer of complexity to the process. Freelance comic book editors are the straw that stirs the drink. They ensure the writer, artist, letterer and colorist are all on the same page and ready to deliver their finished comic book on time.

Aaron Sparrow Bio

Aaron Sparrow is a comic book writer and editor who got his start as a copy editor at Tokyopop. In 2009, he became the Lead Editor for Boom! Studios' new line of Disney comic books. In addition to his editorial work on these titles, Sparrow also heavily lobbied to do a Darkwing Duck comic, having been a huge fan of the cartoon.

The Comics Aficionados break down all the latest comic book industry news and rumors. Comic book icon Frank was scheduled to be the guest of honor at the upcoming Thought Bubble Comic Con in the UK. That was until the thought police took down another industry legend. Zainab Akhtar and others scored another scalp for cancel culture, cancelling Frank Miller’s Thought Bubble appearance. (00:05:22) Speaking of scalps, Tom King successfully destroyed another classic DC Comics character. Adam Strange follows Tom King’s string of character assignations of Batman, Mister Miracle, Wally West Flash, Mr. Terrific among others. (00:40:36) Jodie Whittacker’s take on the classic Dr. Who character has seen longtime fans engaging in a cicil war of sorts. BBC announced Jodie Whitacker and Dr. Who showrunner Chris Chibnall are leaving the series this year. (01:04:20) Snake Eyes is meant to revive the fledgling G.I. JOE movie franchise. Unfortunately, Paramount decided to abandon everything that made the character interesting the past 40 years. Snake Eyes bombed at the box office, demonstrating once again fans are tired of Hollywoods relentless identity plotics and pandering. Frank Miller Cancelled, Fans to Blame For Failure, Dismal State of Artist Pay and More

Frank Miller Cancelled, Fans to Blame For Failure, Dismal State of Artist Pay and More

July 30, 2021

Comic book luminary Frank Miller was scheduled to be the guest of honor at the upcoming Thought Bubble Comic Con. Unfortunately, Mr. Miller will no longer be attending after Thought Bubble coordinators were put on blast by Zainab Akhtar for his work on Hill Terror over a decade ago. Another feather in the cap of the woke mob. (00:00:00) Kevin Smith’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation was blasted by long time He-Man fans. Paramount Pictures Snake Eyes bombed at the box office after not honoring the character origins. Hollywood is already making excuses and blaming fans rather than owning up to their own mistakes. (00:23:13) Not surprising, since Hollywood is incapable of delivering anything of substance or original. Wes and Mark Pellegrini discuss the depressing state of comics and entertainment. (00:44:31) Mark and Wes then discuss Vertigo Comics original editor Karen Berger gaslighting longtime comic book fans at Comic Con@Home 2021. (01:05:15) Mark Millar shined a light on the depressing state of comic book artist pay in 2021. Wes and Dok break down all the details. Is The Comic Book Industry Imploding? With Gevian Dargan

Is The Comic Book Industry Imploding? With Gevian Dargan

July 29, 2021

Gevian Dargan, former assistant-editor at Milestone Comics, joins Wes for  “It’s Complicated.” Wes and Gevian discuss hot-button issues many people shy away from today. For decades comic book fans have predicted the impending doom fo the entire industry. There are certainly troubling signs. It appears the industry is courting speculators, which was one of the key components of the 90’s comic book implosion. Several high profile comic creators are leaving DC and Marvel Comics, concentrating on creator owned works. Which can be interpreted as both good and bad. Indie comics are as hot as they’ve been in years. The rise of manga and YA graphic novel sales indicate there is a thirst for comic books that DC and Marvel can’t meet.  Wes and Gevian have an honest, open debate about the current state of comic books. Is the industry imploding? You guessed it, it’s complicated.
